Chapter 10

Mrs. Stephenson

Ipushed myself to my feet, wincing at the ache in my shoulder from where I’d hit the ground. My hands were shaking, but I somehow managed to dust myself off and stumble back toward the auction.

The asphalt seemed slippery as I tried to steady myself, still shaken from the car that had nearly run me down. I hadn’t gotten far before I heard the quick pitter-patter of shoes heading in my direction.

“Oh, my goodness, are you alright?” a shaky voice called out. I turned to see a little old lady rushing over to me. I couldn’t make her out in detail in the dark, but I could tell that she was rather small and frail-looking, as though a good gust of wind could knock her clean off her feet.

"Are you alright?" she asked again breathlessly as she reached me, taking my arm gently. I recognized her as one of the older ladies Tommy had pointed out as a member of the historical society, but there had been so many that her name escaped me now. She had been so quiet I had barely committed her face to my memory. "I saw what happened. That car—are you hurt?"

I was now able to get a better look at my savior. She had a neat shock of white hair and wore an old-fashioned pillbox hat atop her head, a smart pencil skirt, and a soft cream cardigan. A simple string of pearls around her neck and white lace gloves completed her elegant, understated ensemble. Most importantly, she wore a kind, concerned expression, which I hadn’t realized I needed until I looked up into her face.

I flinched, my shoulder still aching from where I’d hit the ground. “I’m okay, just a little rattled.” I tried to offer a reassuring smile, but my mind was racing. “I didn’t even see who was driving.”

The old woman clicked her tongue, helping me steady myself with surprising strength. “Let’s get you inside. You’re shaking like a leaf.”

“Actually, I think I’m going to call a cab and find my way home,” I said. I really wasn’t interested in making another scene inside the hall or bothering Tommy anymore.

“Oh, you won’t be calling any cab, dearie,” she offered kindly. “My car is just around the corner, and you shouldn’t be out alone right now.”

I opened my mouth to politely decline, but my body betrayed me, as I found myself nodding instead. Not having to pay for a cab home sounded like a nice idea.

I sighed inwardly. It seemed there was no getting out of this, and honestly, I didn’t want to walk home alone either. Not after what had just happened. “Alright,” I agreed. “Thank you, um...”

I glanced at the petite woman beside me, her glasses practically magnifying her entire face. I couldn't help but think that maybe I wasn’t much safer being driven home by someone who looked like they could barely see the road. But as we stepped onto the sidewalk, a sleek, black car pulled up to the curb, and my doubts evaporated.
